Separate salt from wind

Salt exposure can arrive as direct inundation, wind-borne spray or saline soil and irrigation. Wind exposure is shaped by open water, street corridors, building corners and gaps in canopy. Record each pressure separately because a species may tolerate one better than the other.

Use plant profiles that distinguish salt-spray tolerance from tolerance of salty or brackish flooding. Do not infer either from a tree simply being described as coastal.

Structure matters as much as the name

At the nursery, inspect trunk and branch arrangement. Look for a dominant leader where appropriate, well-spaced main branches and an intact root flare. Avoid severe trunk wounds, narrow co-dominant stems and root systems circling the container.

After planting, structural pruning during the young-tree years can guide a durable framework. Removing large limbs later is more stressful and creates larger wounds.

Give roots a stable platform

Trees resist wind through a living root-soil system. Planting too deeply, confining roots to a tiny opening, cutting major roots for paving, or allowing saturated soil to weaken an unsuitable species can undermine that system.

A practical storm plan includes pre-season inspection, removal of dead or cracked branches by a qualified professional, and post-storm assessment before major pruning. It does not include routine topping.
